What Does Diversity Mean to You?

Donna Johnson | April 1, 2011

When I started my professional career at an advertising agency years ago, I was told that someone who looked like me would never run an agency. That turned out not to be true but from that point on I was determined to never allow someone else’s limited view define my potential.

Yesterday’s views do not apply in today’s connected world. In fact, one of the most important things a multi-national company can do is to develop a global mind-set.  So to me, diversity means perspectives…and it’s our ability at MasterCard to harness these different thoughts and experiences that are helping us to innovate, and develop products and services that meet the needs of today’s globally diverse consumer.

As MasterCard’s Chief Diversity Officer this is my mission, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to see MasterCard ranked among the top companies for diversity on this year’s DiversityInc. Top 50 Companies for Diversity.

One of the reasons our diversity efforts stand out is due to the success of what we call BRGs or Business Resource Groups.  BRGs are comprised of individuals who come together based on similar interests or experiences.

They are self-governed, employee-led groups that help us create a more inclusive culture to effectively drive business growth, financial performance and success in the global marketplace.

We have 7 groups that operate globally ranging from what we call yo-pros (young professionals) to E.A.S.T (Empowering Asian Employees for Success and Thought Leadership).

Here’s a short video from my colleagues about what diversity means to them.
