Walking the Walk: Our Commitment to Putting Privacy Principles into Practice

Kevin Stanton | February 3, 2012

Last week, JoAnn Stonier, MasterCard’s Global Privacy & Data Protection Officer, presented at an event commemorating Data Privacy Day alongside a panel of industry experts at the George Washington University Law School.

One comment that really hit home for me came from the keynote speaker, Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill, who very astutely reminded us that “believing in…principles is important, but taking those principles and putting them into practice is what really matters.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. What good is talking the talk if you don’t intend to walk the walk?

Those remarks inspired me to reflect on our approach to privacy and information management. It’s not enough to say that we’re committed to protecting privacy. We have to demonstrate that our commitment is real, meaningful and lasting.

That’s why – as the leader of our Advisors business – I’m proud to work side-by-side with our Global Privacy and Data Protection colleagues throughout the product development process. Together, we ensure that our offerings deliver value to customers, consumers and merchants while maintaining a sharp focus on protecting privacy and using information responsibly.

The responsible use of information isn’t an afterthought – it’s front and center when we consider the evolution of our business. It’s a commitment we take seriously, and part of who we are as a company.

Did you watch the Data Privacy Day event? What resonated the most for you? Do you have ideas about how we can better communicate with you about our approach to privacy? I look forward to the conversation.
