You may have heard that as of January 27, 2013 merchants in certain states are now allowed to charge consumer
s an additional checkout fee when using a credit card. This is an important issue and we want to make sure you are properly informed about this change and exactly what it means.
This fee is not mandatory, it is not imposed by MasterCard and many merchants will likely not choose to add it to consumers’ bills. However, those merchants that do implement the fee are required to properly notify consumers of the charge, and the amount, prior to checkout.
To help you understand the facts, we’ve created some tools to better under the changes:
- Visit www.checkoutfacts.com, a website designed to explain the new checkout fee in a thorough, yet clear, way.
- View a short video that explains the issue, an infographic with all of the pertinent facts, and a section with frequently asked questions.
We hope you will take advantage of these tools to help you better understand some of the new changes.
