Why should “cash always be king”? And our bulky wallets unwittingly reshaped by the many plastic cards that each of us have?
For this week’s #MCIntern Photo Challenge, we were asked “How are we part of the cashless generation?” The summer interns and management associates at the Singapore office took this opportunity to figuratively illustrate what the future holds. We toyed with the many plastic cards in our wallets and of course the idea of a truly mobile wallet – one that we could use to easily pay for meals, mrt/subway rides, beers at a pub, groceries at check-outs, clothes from retail stores, gasoline at kiosks, with just a quick wave of our cellphones leveraging NFC sensors amongst others.
This has long been described as imminent and we, the millennials, definitely think it will no longer remain elusive.
Many innovations have bridged the gap like MasterCard’s MasterPass, Square’s credit card reader, Apple’s Passbook, Google’s Google Wallet and many others. These could one day become mainstream adoption and that day, we feel, is not too far away. In recent years, venture capitalists have also started channeling millions into promising mobile payment and digital wallet services startups!
So here goes our tagline envisioning the new era: “No more cash, not even cards, it’s MOBILE TIME!”
