What happens when you ask top talent to design and code apps to create more sustainable, efficient and livable cities? The Smart Cities Expo World Congress recently found out when it brought city planners together to share their ideas and highlight opportunities on how to create efficient cities.
Throughout the year, the Smart City App Hack saw participation from 11 cities around the world and 164 finished apps. The 15 best apps to come out of SCAH were invited to the 2015 Final Awards Ceremony to pitch their idea.
The winning team, Unplis, didn’t have to travel too far from home. The Barcelona team was recognized for having the best integrated MasterCard APIs.
The word “unplis” is a Spanish idiom meaning “in a jiffy”, and that’s exactly what the creators of the app promise: to deliver shopping goods in the blink of an eye. Their value proposition is to enable people to order from local merchants, with a guaranteed delivery within 60 minutes. To implement this, they have teams of local “personal shoppers” along with enrolled merchants whose products are show-cased in their app. This is a project that implies a 4-way win: merchants, customers, cities (reduced travel) and local workers.
An additional prize granted to Unplis is a ticket to the Grand Finale of “Masters of Code” in Silicon Valley. There, they will compete against the other regional winners for $100,000, extensive MasterCard mentoring as well as the ultimate Grand Finale title, Masters of Code. We wish them the very best in the next Masters of Code. Stay tuned to see if they take home the grand prize.
