Singapore, 1 February 2016 – MasterCard today announced the 2016 recipients of the MasterCard Scholarship for Women at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Lin Ying Chieh and Zhao XiYuan were selected for their stellar academic records, leadership and entrepreneurial potential, passion for technology and commitment to aiding the communities around them.
The partnership with SUTD is part of MasterCard’s commitment to empowering women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields and promoting collaborative efforts to further this goal. The two-year-old scholarship is awarded to third-year female undergraduates pursuing an education in technology, and aims to equip awardees with the skills and training necessary to take on leadership roles in the technology sector. Scholarship recipients will also pursue an internship at MasterCard, where they will gain first-hand insights and understanding into the workings of a technology company.
Professor Thomas Magnanti, President of SUTD, conveyed his thanks to MasterCard for its continued support to nurture young female engineering talent. He said, “SUTD is committed to developing graduates with a competitive edge in technology, design and business; and who are ready to lead in evolving innovation economies. The MasterCard Scholarship for Women aligns well with SUTD’s mission, particularly to attract more women in technology. We see a long-term partner in MasterCard and look forward to working together to help technically-grounded female leaders attain their professional goals in the technology sector.”
Lin Ying Chieh, shared that her dream of starting up a systems design company is taking shape because of the generosity of MasterCard. Ying Chieh said, “The scholarship has empowered me to pursue an engineering degree at SUTD. It helps further my interest in Engineering Systems and Design while at the same time enabling me to contribute back to the technology, design and entrepreneurship community. I am thankful to MasterCard for supporting me in achieving my goals and aspirations.”
Zhao XiYuan, a Math enthusiast said, “I am very grateful to MasterCard for offering me the scholarship. The award is a motivation for me to further excel in my studies. I am keen on Mathematical Finance and would like to work with our Engineering Systems Design faculty to organise some workshops relating to Finance and Trading that could be beneficial to SUTD students.”
Georgette Tan, Group Head, Communications, Asia Pacific, MasterCard, said, “We still have a long way to go before women are equally represented in STEM-related careers, and the initiatives we have in place are aimed at addressing this gap. From work placement programs to scholarships for women such as this one, we hope to create a pipeline of women who want careers in the technology sector.”
