Jakarta, June 27, 2014 – MasterCard has announced a collaboration with Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) and Telkomsel to offer mobile Point-of-Sales (mPOS) payment services to Equity Life Indonesia, making Equity Life Indonesia the first merchant to offer their customers a brand new payment experience.

For BNI, being able to offer this revolutionary payment platform has made it the first bank in Indonesia to deploy mPOS payments technology for their customers. With the support of MasterCard Indonesia, BNI mPOS was first launched on July 5, 2013, in conjunction with the 67th anniversary of BNI.

Mobile devices are rapidly transforming the payments experience, particularly at the point of sale, and not just for consumers but for merchants as well. Merchants, including door-to-door sales people and street vendors that have never accepted card payments are turning to mPOS solutions that help expand their customer base and sales. MPOS benefits businesses which are inherently mobile in nature (such as insurance agents and food delivery) as well as small businesses, due to the lower cost of acceptance and also because it enables them to offer the convenience and security of electronic payments to their customers.

The announcement in Indonesia comes close on the heels of a similar mPOS offerings launched across Asia/Pacific including in Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Malaysia. Since MasterCard’s mPOS system was first introduced in September 2012, there has been a significant growth of 91.6 percent as of March 2014. Currently, mPOS services can be enjoyed in more than 63 countries with approximately 2 million merchants around the world.

According to research conducted by the Annapolis Consulting Group, the use of mPOS worldwide is estimated to grow from 8 million in 2013 to 18 million in 2017. Meanwhile, according to another study by VDC Research titled “Growing Retail Adoption of Mobile POS”, growth in the use of the mPOS systems from 2010 to 2015, in Indonesia amongst other countries, is expected to be at 11.49 percent per year.
