Singapore, 14 August 2013 – Singaporeans are amongst the most well-travelled in this region, with 78% of the participants surveyed responding that they have travelled for international leisure trips in the past 12 months – according to MasterCard’s latest survey on Consumer Purchasing Priorities – Travel. Other seasoned travellers in the region include Hong Kong and Thailand consumers.
Outlook for leisure travel is set to remain strong, with most respondents having no intention to cut back on travelling for the year ahead. Only 1% of respondents do not intend to travel, while 33% have definitive plans to travel more in the next 12 months.
Regional destinations remain popular for Singaporeans, with a partiality for budget airlines as a preferred way to travel. Over the next 12 months, 40% of Singaporeans surveyed intend to travel to Australia, while 37% intend to travel to Japan and 37% to Thailand.
If offered an all-expenses paid holiday anywhere in the world, Singaporeans surveyed chose Paris, Japan and London as their top cities of choice. Singaporeans fascination for Japan continues – with consumers choosing Tokyo as the top desirable city destination in Asia.

The MasterCard Survey on Consumer Purchasing Priorities provides valuable insights into consumers’ discretionary spending priorities for the six months ahead. The latest survey (1H2013) was conducted from March to April 2013 and involved close to 8,000 consumers from 24 markets across Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa. In Singapore, 442 consumers were polled in this survey. The previous survey (2H2012) was conducted from November 2012 to January 2013. Data collection was via internet surveys, personal, telephone and computer aided telephone interviews. The survey and its accompanying reports do not represent MasterCard financial performance.
