Sberbank and Mastercard use technology to benefit social responsibility

November 8th, Lisbon – At Web Summit 2016, Sberbank – the largest commercial bank in Russia and CIS – and Mastercard, presented Sberbank Vmeste (‘Sberbank Together’). This digital giving platform takes the form of an app and is designed to boost the involvement of Sberbank customers in charitable initiatives and simplify the process of donating to charities.

The app was co-presented at the summit by Lev Khasis, the first Deputy Chairman of Sberbank’s Executive Board, Vladislav Kreynin, Managing Director of Sberbank’s Customer Relations Department, and Galina Ganeyeva, Expert Sales, Mastercard, Russia.

When individuals choose to donate to charities, their decision making can often be impulsive and emotionally driven, with a lack of understanding about how the charity works. If a charity is not well known, potential donors need to do a lot of research before making their decision. Sberbank and Mastercard want to simplify this decision making process and facilitate easy donations via this trusted platform, which will benefit donors and charities alike.

Technology makes people’s lives easier, enabling everyday tasks to be tackled in a faster and more convenient way. Using this new app, Sberbank Vmeste users can select the types of charities that mean the most to them, form their own microfunds, or choose to distribute a fixed monthly amount equally among a certain number of charities. Social media sharing mechanics will help to raise the profile of the charities involved and encourage new donations.

Vmeste is currently in the early beta stage and Sberbank will drive the promotion of Vmeste to its 80 million retail customers in the country from December 2016. Vmeste is available as an app on iOS and Android, or via the Sberbank website. Sberbank plans to expand the platform to its other CIS and Eastern European markets.

Founded in 1841, Sberbank provides commercial banking and financial services to over 135 million people and 1 million businesses in 20 countries in CIS and Eastern Europe. With more than 17,000 retail branches, it is the largest commercial bank in Russia where over 70% of the population are its customers. Sberbank’s current market capitalization exceeds US$39 billion which puts it at #102 on Forbes’s list of the world’s biggest public companies. 50% + 1 of Sberbank’s shares is owned by the Central Bank of Russia, while over 45% belongs to international investors.
