Zurich, May 26, 2016 – Having launched in February 2014, MasterPass, the global digital payment service by MasterCard, has been setting new standards for online shopping. Since 2015, MasterPass has also been available in Switzerland. As of today, more than 300,000 costumers have registered and are able to use MasterPass at more than 2,500 Swiss online merchants – amongst them well-known brands such as Ticketcorner, Jelmoli, Baur au Lac Vins and the Swiss running shoe specialist On.

E-commerce is currently growing 33% faster than bricks and mortar commerce. In 2015, Switzerland had a market volume of 7.2 billion Swiss francs, 4.5 % more than in the previous year (Source: Statista/Statista). And more and more consumers use mobile payment options for shopping via the internet. Therefore, online shoppers as well as merchants are increasingly interested in new payment options, which are safe, easy and convenient at the same time. One of them being Ticketcorner, the market leader in the ticketing business, Jelmoli – The House of Brands, Baur auf Lac Vins, leader in premium wine-trading, as well as the Swiss sportshoes specialist On, who all joined the MasterPass network this year.


“For purchasing event tickets, fast and secure payment processes are crucial. Therefore, for us, MasterPass is an ideal addition,” said Andreas Angehrn, CEO of Ticketcorner. “The platform by MasterCard makes cumbersome multiple entries of payment and delivery information obsolete and therefore facilitates the payment process for our clients.”

MasterPass is fast and easy to use: when checking out through the shopping basket, the user chooses the option “Buy with MasterPass”. The cost-free one-time registration is self-explanatory and can either be completed directly via the Swiss MasterPass-Website, through the own respective bank or right during the payment process on the merchant’s site. After the one-off registration with MasterPass, the registration process often required by online merchants, as well as the time-consuming repeated entry of account and delivery information, will remain obsolete in all online stores that offer MasterPass. The only requirement for the registration is a valid credit card, be it a MasterCard or a card from another payment network.

MasterPass offers its users the highest security standards when shopping online. All entered data is protected by multi-level security features, for example through a password in combination with a security application. Unlike when entering data within the browser, data transfer to the merchant is encrypted. Only the necessary information needed for the specific transaction is shared with the merchant. All sensitive card data remain with the issuer. Also an advantage for small and medium-sized online stores: thanks to the established security system, they do not have to face the challenge of data management and the handling of payments.

The level of acceptance for the comprehensive payment model in Switzerland has been high. According to Viseca, MasterPass is offered to all their custumers and can be used in more than 2,500 local online stores, counting over 300,000 registered users. Swisscard and UBS are currently within a trial phase and will shortly offer MasterPass to their costumers. Further issuers will follow this year. Furthermore, the solution is future-oriented: in contrast to some competitive products, MasterPass is no niche solution, but allows its users to pay in approximately 270,000 online stores in 29  countries worldwide and will offer them safe and fast mobile payment at the POS in the future.
