Miami, February 27th, 2020 – Mastercard, a leading technology company in the payment industry and the largest sponsor of international football, signed an agreement with the South American Football Confederation, CONMEBOL, to be the official payment services partner and the contactless payment brand for CONMEBOL Copa América Argentina—Colombia 2020, CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 and, for the first time, Women’s CONMEBOL Copa América.
With the expansion of the sponsorship of women’s football in Latin America, Mastercard reinforces its commitment to diversity and emphasizes the importance of achieving gender equality in sports, seeking to boost women’s football in the region at a pivotal moment, when it is winning in professionalism and competitiveness.
“At Mastercard, we believe in diversity as a key innovation factor in all areas, including sports,” said Carlo Enrico, President of Mastercard Latin America and the Caribbean. “With the expansion of our portfolio, we seek to create new connections that inspire acceptance and drive a culture of belonging; this will lead us to reach our full potential as a society,” he added.
“For CONMEBOL, having the confidence of world companies such as Mastercard which provide the most advanced technology to the oldest national team championship in the world — our CONMEBOL Copa América — means great support for our South American football development and promotion project,” said José Astigarraga, General Secretary of CONMEBOL.
By being the official brand of contactless payments in South American football, Mastercard guarantees safe, simple, and reliable ways to pay for everything that fans enjoy, as well as offering them Priceless experiences.
A Smart Shopping Experience
During this extraordinary sporting event in Latin America, the company will continue to promote the use of technologies that allow transactions to be carried out simply and safely, giving cardholders control and peace of mind. For instance, the new generation of Mastercard debit cards are digitally connected with verification and authenticity technologies that protect transactions in the physical world and mitigate any cybersecurity risks in electronic purchases during the tournament.
More Time Enjoying, Less Time Paying
Contactless payments have revolutionized the way people experience football in the region, thanks to the ability to pay up to 10 times faster, and for being one of the safest methods, as the card never leaves the customer’s hand. Consumers choose this technology because it saves them time, in addition to preventing them from carrying cash. Additionally, businesses also benefit from saving time at checkout while reducing operational costs.
“In Latin America, our passion for football brings us closer, it is part of our identity, and it mobilizes us beyond all our differences,” said Roberto Ramirez Laverde, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Mastercard Latin America and the Caribbean. “With this sponsorship, we seek to bring Latin American fans closer to their passion, breaking down barriers and inspiring them to start something Priceless,” he added.
As a sponsor of the three tournaments, Mastercard will have the following rights:
- Exclusivity in the payment services category, including Official Contactless Payment brand
- Global rights to use the tournament name and brand
- Exclusive rights to the trophies
