In 2013, MasterCard ran a Priceless Causes campaign that connected a world beyond cash to a world beyond hunger for German consumers. For every MasterCard purchase at participating retailers one school meal was donated to a program run by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Ethiopia.
At the end of the campaign MasterCard was able to donate over 1.6 million school meals and thus helped to make a difference in the fight against global hunger. Ethiopia is one of over 60 countries where WFP helps schoolchildren by providing daily, nutritious school meals, and enabling them to attend school.
In September 2012, MasterCard and the World Food Programme had announced a global partnership that sees WFP leveraging MasterCard’s technology and brand capacities to help address the world’s most solvable problem. Now one year after the German campaign a group of MasterCard employees is visiting local communities in Ethiopia to learn more about school feeding projects and the impact made through the partnership with WFP.
To document the progress of this specific program benefiting schoolchildren in Ethiopia, MasterCard selected a college intern from hundreds of applications. Verena Bachler is a Master student in International Business and Politics at the Copenhagen Business School – and you can follow her trip to Ethiopia on aworldbeyondhunger.tumblr.com, Twitter/MasterCardDE or Facebook.
