New credit card ready to complement Mastercard destination programs when international travel rebounds

Mastercard today announced its partnership with AEON Credit Service (Asia) Company Limited to launch the new AEON CARD WAKUWAKU Mastercard Credit Card. The credit card is designed to address the ever-growing trend of digitalization seen amongst Hongkongers who are shopping online more frequently and love travelling to Japan.

New research from the Mastercard Economics Institute finds that for the first time since the pandemic, global leisure and business flight bookings surpassed pre-pandemic levels, while spending on cruise lines, buses, and trains saw sharp improvements this year, signaling a key milestone in the global travel recovery. In addition, the reopening of borders has put Asia Pacific back on the tourist map, and if flight booking trends continue at the current pace, an estimated 430 million more passengers will fly in Asia Pacific compared to last year.

Ahead of Japan’s reopening to tourists, the newly launched card is set to work hand-in-hand with Mastercard destination programs such as Make Japan Yours, which offers exclusive benefits and privileges for Mastercard cardholders looking to travel to Japan when international travel makes its rebound.

The AEON CARD WAKUWAKU Mastercard Credit Card offers cardholders exciting, high-value benefits and privileges, including a six percent cash rebate on online spending and food delivery as well as a three percent cash rebate when spending in Japan on top of other rewards such as cash rebates of one percent on local food and beverage spending, four percent extra cash rebate when spending overseas during cardholders’ birthday month, five percent discounts on the 2nd and 20th of every month at AEON stores and 0.5 percent cash rebate on other spending. With a perpetual annual fee waiver and no transaction fees on foreign currency transactions[1], the card offers a convenient and worry-free payment experience.

Local pop star Jace Chan, known for her youthful and vibrant energy and love of online shopping, is endorsing the newly launched card, helping to raise awareness amongst younger Hongkongers. To boost customers’ familiarity with its digital system, those who successfully apply for the AEON CARD WAKUWAKU Mastercard Credit Card through the “AEON HK” Mobile App can enjoy more cash rebates.

Tomoharu Fukayama, Managing Director, AEON Credit Service (Asia) Company Limited, said, “The pandemic has accelerated the shift towards a more digital world and triggered changes in online shopping behaviors that are likely to have a lasting effect. To overcome headwinds our business has faced and expand our customer base, AEON Credit Service (Asia) and Mastercard have joined hands to launch the AEON CARD WAKUWAKU Mastercard Credit Card with numerous promotional programs to capture the ever-changing credit card spending needs and demand."

Helena Chen, Managing Director, Hong Kong and Macau, Mastercard, said, “Mastercard is proud to partner with AEON Credit Service (Asia) to introduce the AEON CARD WAKUWAKU Mastercard Credit Card. In view of the rising trend in global leisure and business flights, as well as the gradual reopening of borders in Asia Pacific, travelers now have a new payment companion alongside Mastercard destination programs such as Make Japan Yours for their future international trips.”

The new card complements Mastercard destination program series, which provides Mastercard cardholders priceless and exclusive offers across shopping, dining, entertainment, arts, fashion, sports and wellness that they can experience anywhere in the world.
