The collaboration will enable payments card acceptance at MRT Jakarta, providing more payment options to commuters and spearheading a new era of seamless urban mobility

Mastercard today announced a partnership with PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), the operator of MRT Jakarta facilities and infrastructure, to boost cashless transit experiences. This landmark collaboration was announced at the inauguration of the newly renamed Senayan Mastercard Station, formerly known as Senayan Station.

As MRT Jakarta’s strategic partner, Mastercard will introduce convenient cashless top-ups and purchases of MRT cards for commuters traveling on the MRT. Starting from 18 December 2023, commuters will be able to top up MRT cards at manned counters within MRT stations using Mastercard debit cards. In addition, consumers will now have the option to purchase MRT tickets through the MyMRTJ app using Mastercard credit cards, marking the first credit card acceptance on this app. All Mastercard cards can also be used to purchase MRT cards at station counters.

MRT Jakarta has seen a substantial increase in ridership since 2019. By September 2023, the average daily ridership of MRT Jakarta has soared to 100,000 passengers, surpassing the targeted 70,000 passengers per day1. In 2022, MRT Jakarta provided its services to nearly 20 million passengers, representing a 175 percent increase from 20212. With the ongoing development of phase 2 of the MRT Jakarta construction project, the number of passengers from Lebak Bulus to Ancol is anticipated to reach 290,000 per day.

For over a decade, Mastercard has been partnering with transit operators in their endeavors to enhance operational efficiencies and improve rider experiences. Every year, more than 4 billion mobility transactions across public transport, private mobility, and automotive, are processed on the Mastercard network globally. In Indonesia, by facilitating the utilization of cashless payments on public transit, an everyday activity for millions of Indonesians, the partnership between Mastercard and MRT Jakarta is bolstering the Indonesian government's overarching agenda to drive digital transformation.

Tuhiyat, president director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), underscored MRT Jakarta's commitment to fostering partnerships and teamwork to improve the public transportation system to accommodate diverse lifestyles. He highlighted, “The collaboration with Mastercard is a testament to MRT Jakarta's inclusive approach, which aims to cultivate Jakarta as the hub of national economic and business activities. Looking ahead, we look forward to further collaboration and innovation with Mastercard to improve the travel experience of MRT Jakarta passengers.”

Aileen Goh, president director, PT Mastercard Indonesia, said “At Mastercard, we are harnessing our global network and technology to help solve public sector challenges, such as through the digitalization of vital public services. This includes transit where Mastercard collaborates with key partners worldwide to enable frictionless, accessible transit experiences that drive increased ridership, efficiencies and innovation. Under this partnership, a first for Indonesia, PT MRT Jakarta and Mastercard will be working closely to ensure that anyone in Jakarta, resident or tourist, can enjoy an improved and simplified transit experience, starting with convenient and secure cashless payments. More importantly, because transit touches the lives of a large proportion of the population, this initiative has the ability to shift consumer behavior to cashless payments at scale, creating a halo effect that meaningfully impacts change and fosters digital transformation and inclusion.”

Today’s announcement is the first collaboration between Mastercard and MRT Jakarta . This partnership is a key part of Mastercard and MRT Jakarta's broader strategy to bolster urban mobility in Indonesia, marking a substantial step towards a more interconnected and digitally empowered urban landscape.

It also aligns with Mastercard’s continued global commitment to supporting governments in driving inclusive, sustainable and efficient economic development, and delivering better outcomes for residents and communities. With this latest move, Jakarta joins over hundreds of cities around the world including Singapore, London, New York, and Bangkok where Mastercard has helped to implement contactless transit systems.
