Tanzania - 24 July 2018 – Mastercard has partnered with Selcom to enable local businesses and merchants to accept interoperable digital payments, many for the first time. Consumers are now able to make quick, easy and secure payments with their mobile money wallets or banking apps at Puma Retail Stations across Dar es Salaam. The payment solution will soon be launched in other regions across the country where Puma Energy operates.

Masterpass QR, launched in Tanzania by Mastercard removes the need for consumers to carry cash or physical bank cards. The mobile solution enables consumers to select their mobile money wallet, for example Tigo Pesa, or opt to use their USSD banking menus to make a payment at Puma Retail Stations. Banks that already offer Masterpass QR as part of their mobile offering include: Access Bank, Akiba Commercial Bank, Amana Bank, BancABC, Canara Bank, Exim Bank, I&M Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, and Tanzania Postal Bank.

Consumers from several of these banks can also download the Masterpass Tanzania app on their smartphones and register to make Masterpass QR payments directly from their bank accounts.  Puma Energy customers are guaranteed the security of being able to fill up their tank by scanning the QR (Quick Response) code displayed at the pump on their smartphones, or by entering the 8-digit merchant code into the USSD menu on their feature phones.

“Delivering efficient, secure and cost effective acceptance solutions is an essential step to providing the level of support required to grow and develop businesses in Tanzania. Masterpass QR will provide Puma Energy a reliable and convenient acceptance option to traditional point of sale devices and cash,” says Chris Bwakira, Vice President & Area Business Head, East Africa, Mastercard.

“Partnering with Mastercard makes sense for us from both a business efficiency and payment safety perspective, helping Puma to deliver a seamless customer experience, every time,” says Mr. Philippe Corsaletti, General Manager, Puma Energy Tanzania. “Puma Energy is the first fuel station chain in Sub-Saharan Africa to accept Masterpass QR transactions, demonstrating that we remain one of the most innovative fuel suppliers on the continent.”

Mastercard and Selcom have launched a consumer promotion with Puma Energy that started 29 June.. Motorists who fill up at Puma Retail Stations will be offered 100 TZS cash back into their mobile wallets for every 2,000 TZS paid via Masterpass QR throughout the week (Monday – Sunday) at designated times. The promotion is geared to help consumers make the shift to digital payment solutions, and embrace a new, more connected world.
