Mastercard Day Puerto Rico explores the technologies shaping the next era of commerce
August 26, 2026 | San Juan, Puerto RicoIndustry leaders gathered at Mastercard Day to examine how AI, digital payments, data, security, and new consumer experiences are reshaping commerce in Puerto Rico.
Mastercard convened leaders from financial institutions, merchants, fintechs, technology companies, and strategic partners for Mastercard Day Puerto Rico. The forum examined the signals redefining commerce and payments, from artificial intelligence and digital agents to the evolution of data, security, and consumer experiences.
Sessions explored five areas shaping an increasingly connected, intelligent, and digital economy: the trends redefining commerce and financial services; agentic commerce; the changing relationship between consumers and brands in the AI era; solutions that can help small and medium-sized businesses grow; and the evolution of marketing as brands seek to create value through people’s passions. Across the discussions, speakers emphasized the importance of pairing innovation with trust, security, and practical applications that address everyday needs.
“We are entering a new era of commerce in which technology will make it possible to anticipate needs and create increasingly simple and personalized experiences. The opportunity is to bring these capabilities to practical use cases that address real needs and create value for consumers and businesses in Puerto Rico,” said Pablo Cuarón, country manager for Mastercard in Puerto Rico.
Agentic commerce was one of the event’s central themes. Enabled by artificial intelligence, intelligent agents can support consumers as they discover products, evaluate options, make decisions, and complete transactions. The discussion highlighted the potential for more seamless and personalized experiences, along with the need to preserve security, transparency, and user control.
The agenda also examined how AI is changing what consumers expect from financial institutions and brands. Speakers discussed how exclusive experiences, new payment and financing solutions, and multifunctional credentials can help organizations build more meaningful customer relationships, strengthen brand preference, and increase everyday engagement.
Small and medium-sized businesses were another central focus. Speakers explored how financial institutions can support their growth through an integrated ecosystem that extends beyond payment acceptance to include digital tools, cash flow management, and capabilities that can strengthen productivity, resilience, and competitiveness. The session also highlighted the opportunity to create greater value for this strategic segment and deepen relationships with small business customers.
The event also addressed the evolution of marketing in the AI era. As technology reshapes expectations and the way people engage with brands, the conversation focused on the growing importance of relevance and on how brands can create value by connecting consumers with the passions that matter to them.
Mastercard Day Puerto Rico concluded with a shared takeaway: the future of commerce will depend on more than adopting new technologies. It will also require the ecosystem to turn innovation into secure, intuitive, and relevant experiences that create value for consumers and businesses across Puerto Rico.
