From own goals to penalty shoot deciders: Mastercard launches its Web3 UEFA Champions League trivia competition to crown most knowledgeable football fans

February 7, 2024 | LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM

Are you ‘that’ fan who instinctively knows the number of UEFA Champions League Finals that have gone to penalties[1]?

Mastercard is giving footie trivia buffs the chance to be rewarded for their knowledge in a new Web3 powered competition.

Fans can collect Mastercard X UEFA Champions League branded digital passes via the newly introduced pass to priceless platform, granting them the chance to win tickets to the UEFA Champions League Final at London’s Wembley Stadium.

For football fans able to recount the largest victory in the history of the UEFA Champions League[2], Mastercard has today launched the ultimate Web3 powered trivia competition that rewards players for their footie knowledge and will crown football’s top trivia buff.

Throughout the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League tournament, Mastercard cardholders across France, Spain, Germany, UK, Italy, USA, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina will be able to compete in a real-time football-focused quiz, answering questions from the highest scoring game[3] to the year the first-ever Group Stage took place[4].

Each quiz will kick-off 30 minutes before the start of each UEFA Champions League round of Tuesday fixtures, starting on 13 February with the last one taking place right before the final match on 01 June.

Winners of each round will be rewarded with UEFA Champions League match tickets, and they’ll climb the competition leaderboard. The lucky player sitting at the top of the leaderboard after the semi-final on 30 April will win the grand prize of tickets to the final at London’s Wembley Stadium.

Those eager to test their football smarts can gain access to the competition by signing up to, where they can claim a unique Mastercard X UEFA Champions League branded NFT, which acts as the key to unlocking the quiz and its prizes.

Players will also be offered rewards for sharing their passion for football by referring friends, family and followers to join them in the competition. This includes a ‘Share the Love of Football’ digital token and ‘free kicks’ which will allow them to skip a question in the game.

“As a UEFA Champions League partner of 30 years, we know first-hand the unwavering passion that football fans have for the game, so we’re excited to leverage our Web3 platform, pass to priceless, to put their passion and knowledge to the ultimate test,” says Beatrice Cornacchia, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Europe. “Through our football-focused trivia competition, we are bringing together the football community beyond the field, connecting them to priceless possibilities and celebrating the very best of the UEFA Champions League.”

Merging Digital & Physical Experiences

The UEFA Champions League trivia competition will be part of a new platform called pass to priceless, which brings Mastercard's Web3 assets into a unified space.

As cardholders collect digital passes, in the form of NFTs, they will be granted access to experiences that span Mastercard’s expansive sponsorship portfolio. The platform merges the power of physical and digital to bring cardholders closer to their passions like sports, entertainment, music and gastronomy and more.

Mastercard has been at the forefront of harnessing new technologies to enhance the consumer experience, having launched initiatives like the Mastercard Artist Accelerator and collaborating on exclusive co-branded NFTs with entities like Major League Baseball.
